Cowbridge Rotary Club’s display for ‘End Polio Now’ day outside Caffè Nero on Friday 24th October was enlivened by a visit from the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Wales, Alun Cairns, MP.
Despite the cloudy skies, the threat of rain and a very busy workload from Westminster, Alun found time to drop by and lend his support for this worthwhile cause, an attempt to eradicate the curse of this crippling childhood disease from wherever it remains in the world today.
As the figures in the picture show, it’s really just down to a hundred or so cases now globally and we are just that little gap away from wiping it out completely. The Member of Parliament showed a keen grasp of the problems, and often serious dangers, now facing health workers in Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan, the last three counties where the disease still exists, as they attempt to inoculate and protect peoples in these frequently remote and difficult areas.
Rotary clubs all over the world made a special effort to highlight some of these problems on Friday as they came together to raise awareness of how close we are to achieving the aim of confining the disease to history and ending this chronic wasting affliction for ever.
