Palmerston Primary pupil Niamh Hurn has won her battle to receive a life changing operation after the NHS confirmed that it will fund the £30,000 operation on March 27th.
Vale MP Alun Cairns had previously backed the Hurn family campaign to raise money to fund the operation privately. Mr Cairns also contacted the local health board to raise the issue over the need for Niamh to receive the operation before the age of ten in December 2015.
Mr Cairns said: “I am absolutely thrilled at the news that Niamh will get the much needed operation in the spring. We have been working hard for several months to get the operation approved on the NHS. The chances of a successful operation was very much time dependent as it was needed for Niamh before she was 10 years old. We were always hopeful that the NHS would fund the operation, but to get confirmation was such an emotional feeling. If the funding hadn’t been made available, I was considering running the London marathon for the campaign to boost the coffers. The Hurn family are credit to the community – they have done an incredible amount of fundraising, and to see how happy the family were upon receiving the news is already a highlight of my year.”
