Local MP Alun Cairns has called on the Vale Council to justify its decision to close local schools during the NATO summit.
Mr. Cairns is angry at the blanket approach to close schools in Barry and the Vale which conflicts with police advice and the guidance given by the NATO Unit and 10 Downing Street.
The school closures will take place after the six week school holidays. As a result, the start of the new school term will bring undue pressure on parents to arrange child care as well as on employers, who will have to provide additional leave to staff.
Alun Cairns noted that he has seen the advice which was given by the Police, the Downing Street NATO unit and the Welsh Government and has accused the Vale Council for over-reacting, placing more pressure local families.
Schools have been advised to close on Wednesday, 3rd and Friday 5th September 2014 at 2pm and to open at 11am on Thursday 4th September 2014.
Mr Cairns commented:
“Closing schools during the NATO summit is absolutely unnecessary. The Police has categorically stated that there will be no closure of roads. They have merely said that pinch points will be managed whilst the summit is taking place which will minimise the impact on the community. They have also commented that they will avoid peak times of travel, taking into account the drop off and pick up times of schools in the area.”
“I have received countless complaints from parents who are concerned about the effects that the school closures will have on their children. What is most shocking is that some schools in Cardiff and Newport will remain open whilst our schools will be closed. The argument about the airport and the roads around it is not recognised by the organising bodies.”
“As a new Welsh Office Minister, I will play a part in the NATO summit. As a result I will continue to pursue matters with the senior Police and the officials at 10 Downing Street to ensure the least possible disruption for Barry and the Vale of Glamorgan.”
