Vale MP Alun Cairns will meet with senior representatives of Co-operative food and the Post Office in Barry today (Thursday) after he called an urgent meeting to discuss the proposed closure of the Post Office facility within the Colcot Road store.
Mr Cairns convened a meeting to highlight concerns from a number of residents about the loss of a local Post Office in such close proximity to the recently closed Highlight Park facility.
Mr Cairns said that the Government is committed to ensuring communities have access to a local Post Office and has written to Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills Vince Cable to draw attention to the particular challenges in Barry and Cowbridge.
Mr Cairns said: “I am angry that local residents could lose access to such an important service in and around Colcot Road. I called the meeting with representatives of both organisations as a matter of urgency to confirm a plan that can maintain services in such an important area of Barry. I have a number of concerns about the process undertaken by the Post Office over planned changes to sites in the Vale of Glamorgan including Cowbridge. I don’t want residents in Barry and the wider Vale to miss out on what I consider to be a vital service.
“Today I called on the Post Office to prioritise the sites in Barry and Cowbridge. I will keep pressing the case to the operators - local people and small business owners need a postal facility nearby.”
