COUNCIL taxpayers in Bridgend are paying £298 a year on average towards the pensions of town hall staff.

Research by Welsh Conservatives has revealed that throughout Wales, band D council tax payers are seeing £273 of their annual bill go towards the massive pensions black hole facing local government.

WELSH Conservative AM Alun Cairns has been presented with an award for the Greatest Contribution in Supporting Business in South Wales, at the South Wales Business Awards in Cowbridge.

The South Wales West AM said:

“I am delighted and deeply humbled to be presented with such an award.

“All I’ve done is tried to put a bit of WD40 here and a bit of oil there to try and push bureaucracy along, bring different people together and get answers from ministers and officials.

“Business people are the ones who take all the risks. They are the ones who generate the wealth, create prosperity, and provide jobs.”

REGIONAL AM Alun Cairns has urged women in Swansea, Neath and Port Talbot to go along for breast cancer screening after a survey revealed that these areas have among the lowest percentages of attendance in Wales.

Figures released to Welsh Conservative health spokesman Andrew RT Davies show that in the year 2008-09, only 64.8 per cent of eligible women in Neath Port Talbot accepted the invitation to attend a mobile screening unit. In Swansea, the figure was 68 per cent. These were the third and fourth lowest take-ups in Wales. Only Merthyr Tydfil and Pembrokeshire were worse.

REGIONAL AM Alun Cairns is furious at news that Environment Minister Jane Davidson has extended the deadline by a year for the start of dredging off Gower.

Mr Cairns has been nagging ministers about the need for a baseline survey to be completed as part of a planning consent issued to Llanelli Dredging to extract sand from the Helwick Bank.
