We’ve had a number of hustings by now but last night’s at Barry Comprehensive School was the best attended. I understand that over 200 people had applied for tickets and it was clear that more than 150 turned up.
I must say that Barry Comprehensive School is an excellent school. The way the pupils welcomed us was first class. They were courteous, intelligent, instructive and well organised. Many asked questions during the meeting. I am not sure if my answers pleased them all but when we had coffee afterwards they were all keen to engage.
A number have come to complete their work experience in my office. I received a few requests last night and hope they can join me at some stage.
I also want to pay tribute to Mr Swallow (including his wife, Claire, who made the cakes!), Mr Phillips, who chaired the event and all teachers, governors and pupils involved. It was a first class occasion putting politicians to the test.
The event reminded me of the Cameron Direct meeting that was held in the same school hall some 15 months ago. Cameron Direct was a public meeting aimed at non-Conservatives and almost 250 turned up to question him.
It was a fantastic success (with a number of hostile questions) and as I knock doors around the Vale, people often refer to it, saying how refreshing the meeting was – a political leader talking to real people! |
