Minister seeks face-saving compromise on Foundation Phase |

Commenting on today’s reports that
implementation of the Assembly Government’s flagship Foundation Phase early
years learning scheme may be delayed due to funding concerns, Shadow Education
Minister Alun Cairns AM said:
“The roll out of the Foundation
Phase has been nothing short of a disaster."

Welsh Conservatives meet head teachers concerned over Foundation Phase |

WELSH Conservatives will be meeting with worried head teachers from across Wales today, ahead of tomorrow’s Finance Committee inquiry into Foundation Phase funding.
Teachers, Unions and opposition parties repeatedly warned the Education Minister that the scheme was under-funded.
For months, Jane Hutt was in denial about the problem – then in an embarrassing climb down she announced an extra £5mn funding for the early years teaching programme.
Welsh Conservative AMs have received correspondence from head teachers right across Wales stating their extreme concern about introducing the scheme in September.

COMMENTING on the Assembly
Government’s decision to make unions aware of a statement on the Foundation
Phase early years learning initiative before members of the National Assembly,
Shadow Education Minister and South Wales West AM Alun Cairns
said:
“It is unacceptable that unions are
given a statement on this important phase in early years’ learning before the
National Assembly has a chance to examine the proposals
tomorrow."

Cairns condemns Foundation Phase funding |

Nursery and Reception classes in school across the
Vale and the rest of Wales
are set to run into crisis unless the Welsh Assembly Government comes up with
extra funds for the introduction of its groundbreaking new teaching plan for
the foundation phase, according to Conservative AM, Alun Cairns.
The Assembly Government is reforming the style and
content of teaching of 3 to 7 year olds. This new teaching programme, the Foundation Phase will be rolled out in
September. Pupils will learn through
'structured play'. They will be
encouraged to discover for themselves and learn through experiences. The pilot scheme was resounding success, however, conerns have been raised about the financing of the programme.
Alun Cairns, Shadow Education Minister said that
although the policy has been welcomed by all concerned, Governors, Parents and
Teachers, a crisis is looming because of the lack of funds.
