School bus safety plans rejected by Assembly Government
Wednesday, 01 October 2008
COMMENTING on the outcome of the Learner Travel Measure vote in the National Assembly this evening, Alun Cairns AM led the debate for the Welsh Conservatives said:

“This is bitterly disappointing. The Assembly Government has sold pupils and parents short.

Families betrayed over school bus safety plans
Tuesday, 30 September 2008
WELSH Conservatives expressed anger and frustration today over the fact the Learner Travel Measure will not address safety needs and will discriminate against welsh language and faith schools.

Alun Cairns AM, who chaired the Learner Travel Measure Committee, said it was extremely disappointing that the Minister was not prepared to test the Assembly’s powers over such important issues.

Legal advice suggests ministers could issue guidance to councils across Wales to introduce compulsory seat belts on school buses, phase out double decker vehicles, and end the practice of three pupils for every two seats.

Archbishop of Wales joins calls to amend measure

Welsh Conservative AM Alun Cairns today welcomed support from the Archbishop of Wales to give pupils and faith and Welsh medium schools the same right to free transport as those elsewhere in the state sector.

In a letter to Transport Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones, the Most Reverend Dr Barry Morgan says he shares the concerns of AMs that some schools could be excluded from new regulations proposed in the Learner Travel Measure.

The committee scrutinising the proposals is due to meet in the National Assembly tomorrow.

Alun Cairns, wrote to the Transport Minister to express concern over the Measure which he claims currently discriminates against children attending faith and Welsh medium schools.

Learner Travel Amendments
Tuesday, 10 June 2008

Alun Cairns has written to the Deputy First Minister outlining his proposals to strengthen the Learner Travel Measure which is due to be considered by the Assembly, next week. The Learner Travel Measure is aimed at improving saftey on school transport but in its current form does little to address safety concerns and makes no provision for parents and children who wish to attend schools of a religious character, welsh medium schools or single sex schools. Alun has drafted a number of ammendments but needs the support of all Assembly Members.

Therefore Alun is asking all parents, teachers and governors to write to the Minister and their Assembly Members, to outline their concerns. If you do write, it would be helpful if you could provide Alun with a copy of your letter, in order to strengthen his campaign. The text of Alun's letter is below.
