Campaigners joined Vale MP Alun Cairns in Barry to oppose plans by the Vale of Glamorgan Council to introduce charges of up to £5 to park in council run car parks. The community has expressed shock at the timing and scale of the parking plans. Mr Cairns has held a number of meetings with residents, Chamber of Trade and campaigners in recent weeks, and a petition has been started for residents against the proposals to sign.
Mr Cairns said: “The community came out in large numbers to express concern about proposals in both Barry and Cowbridge to introduce significant car parking charges. Having spoken to many, many people about these plans – there is anger about the potential impact on our communities. I have also received many messages of support from many residents in other towns like Llantwit Major who are concerned about future plans.
“The Vale of Glamorgan cabinet should listen to the valid concerns and pause to consider the impact and ask the question - fundamentally, will these plans support our towns and surrounding villages? As it stands, the answer is a resounding no.”
