A community shop on Holton Road in Barry has been awarded a £1,500 cash grant from Western Power Distribution – following their nomination by local MP Alun Cairns.

Craig’s Corner community clothes shop is run entirely for the community. They receive donations of clothes, toys and books and the money generated from their sales is put back into our community through the good causes that they support. The shop has strong links with Women’s Aid charity Atal Y Fro and supports many vulnerable people including the homeless.

Alun Cairns MP said, “It was great to visit Bette and Beryl at Craig's Corner after they received a grant of £1500 from Western Power Distribution and I was pleased to put them in touch some weeks ago. This money will go straight back into our community. Everything that goes into the shop is then put towards helping people in need including Women’s Aid and the Foodbank. I want to thank Bette and Beryl for all that they do, and I look forward to continuing to work with them. Please make sure that you pay them a visit. The community clothes shop is on the corner of Holton Road and Robert Street.”

Bette Simms, who runs the store, said, “I’d like to thank Alun and Western Power Distribution for this grant, it’s made a real difference and will go a long way in supporting vulnerable people in Barry.”

Western Power Distribution a running their ‘In This Together – Community Matters Fund’ through which local Members of Parliament can nominate good causes in their community for a cash award. The fund was established by the electricity distributor at the start of lockdown to support grass root organisations in delivering care to vulnerable people and families.
