Vale MP Alun Cairns has called on the Vale Council to take the “strongest possible action” to ensure that the travellers leave Nell’s Point immediately.
Mr Cairns spoke to the group at the site on the day they arrived, and was also present as local authority welfare officers met with the travellers.
Mr Cairns said: “The local authority must learn the lessons from the previous debacle at Dinas Powys earlier in the year and take the strongest possible action immediately to evict the travellers. Nell’s Point is such an iconic site, and I am concerned that sites across the Vale could now be seen as a soft touch for those seeking to trespass. I am very disappointed that the travellers have not left the site today, and what appears to be such a relaxed attitude from the local authority.
“A huge amount of work has gone into regenerating Barry Island, and this site is in the process of being sold for further regeneration. Action must be taken now to ensure that investors and the community are not impacted any further. The encampment is causing significant disruption and mess. I want this sorted, the local council must act decisively and swiftly deliver a positive outcome for those residing and trying to earn a living on the Island.”
