4th July is Independents’ Day

Following on from last year’s Small Business Saturday, Alun Cairns MP has welcomed this week’s Independent’s Day on 4th July.The Local MP is calling on traders and customers across Barry and the Vale of play a part by supporting independent traders. This nationwide initiative is supported by all political parties to encourage people to shop locally and support small businesses in their communities.

Local MP Alun Cairns was left ‘Inspired’ after attending the Vale Inspire Awards ceremony at the Barry Memorial Hall on 19th June.Held every year, the Vale Inspire Awards tie in with the national Adult Learners’ Week campaign that is run by NIACE Dysgu Cymru.

Vale of Glamorgan MP Pledges to Support Drowning Prevention Charity

Alun Cairns MP signed up to support the UK’s drowning prevention charity in its work to reduce drowning and provide water safety education and lifesaving awards across the UK and Ireland.The Vale MP has been in regular contact with a local family who suffered a tragic loss some years ago, who are campaigning for improved safety at local swimming pools and along the coast. 

Merched Y Wawr Visit Westminster

Merched Y Wawr is a Welsh language group for women and the Cowbridge Branch is one of 280 across Wales. The group met their local Alun Cairns as they arrived at Westminster, before they were taken on a tour of the Houses of Parliament.Upon completing the tour of the Houses of Parliament the group took their seats in the public gallery of the House of Commons Chamber.

MP Enjoys Llantwit Major Fayre

There were stalls offering a variety of locally made produce; charities were represented on site and stalls offered fun and entertainment for all. Alun tried his best to hit the bell in the hammer ‘test your strength’ game, hosted by Llantwit and Cowbridge Lions. He also helped local Conservatives raise money for the Air Ambulance by joining them on at a coconut shy.

Freeview Disruption

Local MP Alun Cairns has highlighted that mobile coverage across Barry and Vale is set to improve, with new 4G technology, offering much faster download speeds. He points out, however that a small number of local residents may see a slight television interference, for which filters will be made available. 

Unemployment Falls Yet Again

Unemployment in Barry and the Vale has fallen to a claimant count of 3.7%, according to the latest data from the Office of National Statistics. Vale MP, Alun Cairns has welcomed the news stating that he was pleased to see the long term economic plan having a real impact locally. 

MP Visits Elder Abuse Awareness Event

Alun Cairns MP last week called in to support the Vale 50+ Strategy Forum Elder Abuse Awareness event at Gwenog Court, Barry.This year’s event follows on from the successful exhibition held in Barry Library. The Vale MP and visitors were able to find out useful information from organisations such as Prostate Cancer UK, Age Connects Advocy Team, I.T Support, VOGC Community Safety and Telecare in the Vale. 

MP joins local residents at No 10

Barry residents Jean and Sid Pycroft, joined Alun Cairns MP in a visit to Number 10 Downing Street in honour of their outstanding contribution to SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death from Epilepsy).

Local Resident to get Ushakov Medal

On the day that the D-Day commemorations were being marked, Local MP Alun Cairns visited 90 year old Roy Williams to deliver the news that he was to be awarded the Ushakov Medal for his services during the Second World War. Alun had been approached by Roy Williams following a story that had been run by the Gem in November 2012.
