Alun Cairns was today (19 March) appointed as Secretary of State for Wales and immediately promised to continue working with communities, businesses and the Welsh Government to deliver a package for the whole of Wales.

Vale MP Secures Halving of Severn Bridge Tolls

Vale MP Alun Cairns has welcomed the news that Severn Bridge tolls will be reduced by half following an announcement by the Chancellor George Osborne. Mr Cairns says the positive impact on residents of the Vale will be noticeable – as many who cross the bridge on a daily basis for work or business purposes. The toll will be reduced from 2018, with the current cost at £6.60, meaning the cost of crossing could be more than halved

Defence Minister Visits Pyle Success Story

Philip Dunne MP, Minister for Defence Procurement, joined Alun Cairns MP for a visit to a company based in Pyle to mark a new milestone for the company that exports products around the globe. Mr Dunne and Mr Cairns joined Conservative assembly candidate for Bridgend, George Jabbour, for the visit to AMSS, a manufacturer of equipment used by airlines and airports globally.

Barry Eye-Land

Vale MP Alun Cairns said: “The new Barry Eye is yet another fantastic addition to Barry Island (Eye-land!) and is symbolic of the regeneration that continues. They say a showman should always under promise, and over deliver - that is exactly what Henry Danter and his family have done over the past 12 months.  "The opening of the Barry Eye and the brand new £1m log flume is a vital reminder that the much delayed link road, and traffic problems overseen by the Vale Council must be sorted as a matter of urgency. No excuses, no delays – Barry Island must be open to make the most of renewed interest in the resort. The summer of 2016 has the potential to be the busiest in decades. For the first time since the 1970s, all the commercial premises have been let which is a superb indication of the revival of Barry Island. The Vale Council cannot continue to act as a drag on the growing prosperity thanks to the enormous amount of private investment and ambition shown by entrepreneurs like Henry Danter.”

Car Parking Charges Dropped

Vale MP Alun Cairns said: “Abolishing plans for car parking charges is a fantastic victory for people power – over 100 small businesses, and 7,000 residents were against these plans. The Vale Council were determined to slip this policy through without consulting residents and traders. We campaigned to drag the local authority to the table to hear concerns from local people that would be hit by such a damaging policy. I pay credit to the communities of Barry and Cowbridge for winning the battle against such poorly drafted proposals from the Vale Council that was solely aimed at raising revenue and not helping our communities.”

Car Parking – Barry Island

Alun Cairns MP said: “Car and coach parking will become the number one issue on Barry Island as the regeneration of the area continues. I have long campaigned for improved infrastructure alongside my championing of private investment. Now is the time for the local authority to demonstrate some vision to provide a platform, that is all, to allow the Island to develop over the long term.
