Local MP Alun Cairns joined with Chris Good from St Athan-based Horizon Flight Training to celebrate a boost in the number of local people using the airfield to learn to fly.
Over the past four months there has been a marked increase in the number of people taking up flight training at the part-private part-military base, an encouraging sign for the success of the St Athan Enterprise zone. Llantwit Major residents seem particularly keen to take to the skies this summer with a stream of Llantonians signing up to earn their wings.
Local MP Alun Cairns described his growing number of airborne constituents as a sign that the “economy is taking off” and congratulated the Horizon Flight School for doing their bit to ensure the success of the St Athan project. Chris Good of the Horizon Flight School, attributed the boost to “increasing awareness of our existence” in the local area.
Horizon Flight School is part of Horizon Aircraft Services based at St Athan who also offer flight experience to the public in former military aircraft and fast jets.
Mr Cairns said, “It’s always so exciting walking into the Horizon hangar and seeing the range of former warplanes available to fly. It sets the pulse racing. I can see why Llantwit Major is becoming so keen on aviation.
“It’s great to see flight training becoming more popular as the economy takes off and I am grateful to everyone at Horizon who are doing their best to make the St Athan Enterprise Zone work into the future.”
