Karin Williams, the brave lollipop lady from Rhoose received positive news this week after winning her battle for a blue disabled badge after an intervention by local MP Alun Cairns.
Mrs Williams was initially refused a badge, but the decision was overturned after local MP Alun Cairns intervened in what he has described as a “common sense” decision. Following the accident outside Rhoose Primary School in June last year, Mrs Williams finally received her badge this week.
Brave Karin has been reliant on the support of her husband during the lengthy recovery, and the new badge means she can access facilities across the Vale of Glamorgan.
Karin Williams said: “The blue badge will make such a difference to my day to day life. I had originally been refused a badge despite having a number of long term conditions. I can now access services that will allow me to rebuild my life in Rhoose and return to normality. I have had a number of issues accessing support, but I am grateful for the intervention from my MP.”
Mr Cairns said: “I am delighted that common sense has prevailed for Karin in her quest for support as she gets her life back on track. The Vale Council have been supportive of Karin, but she has very particular needs and I am really pleased that they have reviewed the decision.
“She has been through so much over the past few years, yet her positive outlook on life is infectious.
“Despite meeting Barack Obama and receiving awards Karin was left desperate for support in the way of a blue badge. I was disappointed that she has had to battle so hard for support, but thrilled that she can now access services that can allow her to play a much fuller role in society.”
