Vale MP Alun Cairns is calling on the Welsh Government and Natural Resources Wales to re-assess the Boverton flood prevention scheme after a public meeting revealed that the project was now outside the top fifty list of priority sites in Wales.
At the meeting, local residents were informed that the scheme was at least two years away. Despite initially being described as a top ten project – it was confirmed at the latest meeting that the scheme was in fact not even in the top fifty.
Mr Cairns said: “The flooding problem at Boverton is well known by local residents and the Welsh Government – it should be starting now in preparation for next winter. After many years of waiting, organising a public meeting to tell local residents that the scheme is at least two years away only increases the level of anxiety over flooding during the winter of 2015 and 2016. People living nearby will find it insulting to have a project described as a priority when at least fifty projects sit ahead of it – by definition it is no longer a priority for the Welsh Government.
He added “The project received support from the Treasury by discounting the transport aspect of the formula, so the scheme could and should have been completed many years ago. It is simply not good enough.”
