Local resident Julie Turner has called on the local council and bus operator to end the saga that sees a purpose built bus stop situated next to the Crematorium on Port Road East in Barry closed to buses. The bus stop, costing several thousands to build, has not been used for over a year as it has been deemed unsafe by Cardiff Bus, the local operator.
Mrs Turner met with Vale MP Alun Cairns to highlight the issue that has dragged on for over a year. Mr Cairns has previously written to both the Vale of Glamorgan Council and Cardiff Bus to seek a solution to a problem that sees residents being forced to walk past a purpose built covered stop to catch a local bus.
Julie Turner from Pencoedtre said: “I am very angry that a bus stop that was supposedly built to help local residents like myself cannot be used. It must have cost tens of thousands to build, yet the buses that I use simply drive past it. We have to walk a much greater distance, across a very busy fast moving road, to what is nothing more than a stop gap.”
Mr Cairns said: “I contacted the local authority and the bus company many months ago, and the bus stop is still not in use. The current situation is frankly ridiculous, some minor remedial works would get the bus stop open and I see no reason for the delay. I am calling on the Vale council and Cardiff Bus to get together, set out a schedule of works and get this bus stop open for the benefit of locals. A huge amount of money has been spent building the bus stop, it is imperative that is opened as the current situation is unacceptable.”
